Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
A few dozen bowls and pots with burnished black-top finishes and rouletted sides and bottoms circulated with a few Hausa traders in New York City for a period of a few months around 1995. These vessels were similar in their finish, masterful thin-walled craftsmanship and roundness. Unlike this rare example with a neck, most were closer to hemispherical. They are distinct from typical and Bura and Djenné pottery. Whether they are from a different time period, a different geographic origin or both is unknown. Their finish reminds me of Upper Egypt Kerma ware from the Second Intermediate Period–Early New Kingdom, ca. 1635–1458 B.C. — although they are clearly nowhere near as old. $350
