Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
In all likelihood this eared mammal once served as the handle on a vessel lid, or as the finial of an inverted pot-form. It is unclear if the animal is a sheep, a dog or something else, but it is certainly a mammal in that it has ears. Not being vertical, those ears suggest something other than a dog or at least a creature at rest. Ex collection Joseph Knopfelmacher, New York. Imported into the U.S. when Joe was buying for his landmark SoHo store, Craft Caravan, before he sold the business in 1985.
