Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Kavango beaded skirt. The Kavango region is home to the Shambyu, Gciriku, Mbunda, Kwangali and Mbukshu chiefdoms. Beginning in the sixties, the Shambyu lived much as they always had, but as rebels sued for the independence of Angola from Portugal, conflict in the region led to a refugee crisis and the movement of people from the Kavango region to the Okavango Panhandle. As such, this skirt may originate from either Namibia, Botswana, or the north bank of the Kavango River in Angola. Similar examples of this skirt can be found on the online collections databse of the American Museum of National History.
