Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Ga’anda ancestor vessel circa twentieth c. The skeumorphic cowrie shell motif represents body adornment, while the other impressed decorations represent ritual body scarification. According to Marla C. Berns, “because the Ga’anda view death as a liberation of the soul…the spirit of the departed must be confined and protected” within such a vessel. This enables the living to continue honoring and tending to their deceased loved ones. There are some discreet restorations to the mouth of vessel.
