Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Shrine figures of the Dagari, neighbors of the Lobi, are made in honor of an ancestor, usually male. Traditionally, it is the responsibility of the eldest grandson that upon the death of the grandfather, he ventures out to the bush to fashion a figure from a branch of wood and create a shrine in his honor. Though Dagari shrine figures are often Y-shaped and phalliform, this one is slightly more anthropomorphic in having hips. The figure features an exquisitely encrusted patina, the result of ritual application of chicken blood, millet beer and other sacrifice offerings.
