Ziba Mask with Large Teeth
The Kagera region, west of Lake Victoria, was among the last areas of Tanzania to be tapped for traditional masks and sculpture. Masks from the Ziba or Haya people appeared on the African market relatively late, although some masks were collected very early in the twentieth century. Ziba masks — Ziba referring to one of nine kingdoms in the Kagera region — are characterized by wide-eyed, open-mouthed expressions and deeply incised, kaolin-filled channels that run down the nose and cheeks and circumnavigate the face.
