Ashanti Fetish
This is a fragment of an Ashanti fetish, which is a spiritual object serving protective and healing purposes. The presence of a fetish in one’s domicile demonstrated the purging of evil spirits from that space and its spiritual protection. Fetishes were endowed with powers by diviners or other spiritual authorities. The fact that this fetish is fragmented indicates significant use and handling. Object purchased in Ghana before 1980 by Jerry Vogel, New York.
