Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The Turkana occupy vast, dry lands in northern Kenya. Both the Turkana and their neighbors the Karamajong made such headrests. In the dry, rugged and remote regions of northeastern Uganda and northern Kenya, headrests are still in use amongst pastoralists. This headrest has an exquisite tone and patina indicating years of handling and use. Any inverted U-shaped headrest with pointed or at least sharp outward shoulders emulates the bent-wood style, but is in fact carved to shape.
