Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This Ibibio Anaang mask was discovered with a cache of other African masks and figures in the rear of a warehouse locker. Along with others, this mask was wrapped in newspaper dated June 16, 1974. Other items in these boxes were similarly from southern Nigeria, areas caught up in the Biafran Civil War, 1967 – 1970. Ex collection Sidney and Gae Berman. The forehead indicates that the mask was possibly polychrome at one point, and then blackened before 1974. The half-mast eyes are beautiful and distinct.
