Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Eccentric mask from the Ogoni people of southeastern Nigeria. The chair sitting atop the mask’s coiffure is inscribed with the name “Nwiodage Nwile” — likely the artist’s signature. Other inscriptions mark the face like tattoos; the number 26 appears below the jaw on the left side. Fiber is wound at the back to attach the mask’s articulated jaw, a trademark of Ogoni woodcarvings.
