Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This very handsome and somewhat atypical Igbo mask exited Nigeria during the Biafran War period, arriving in New York sometime between 1969 and 1972. According to a label on the inner rim of the mask it was exhibited at the Lowe Art Museum in 1973. The Lowe Museum is located in Coral Gables, Florida, not far from the winter home of the mask’s former owners. Carved from a dense lustrous wood with traces of kaolin and other pigments. Ex NYC estate, provided with a custom base. A similar Ngwo mask can be found in Igbo Arts: Community and Cosmos on page 129.
