Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Though a utilitarian tool, axes can also be artistically embellished and regarded as aesthetically pleasing objects with ceremonial purpose, on par with royal scepters. This Songye example features a large, carved wooden handle with a wrought iron blade top. The blade is adorned with incised patterns, coils and diminutive human faces which appear on each side. Axes such as this one symbolize royal power and status and are used ritualistically throughout southeastern Congo. This piece’s complex construction and design indicate its royal association.
