Moba Tchitcheri Statue

This authentic and old statue is a tchitcheri, or figurative shrine object, of the Moba people of northern Togo. Wooden figures like these paid tribute to particular ancestors and would be placed on family altars for purposes of protection and familial honor. The size speaks to this altar object’s influential presence. An indigenous textile is wrapped around the figure’s midriff.
